Metropolitan High School Theater Awards

Helen Hayes Youth Theatre

2009 marked the 10 year anniversary of the Metropolitan High School Theater Awards. The "Metros" were founded at the now defunct Helen Hayes Theatre Company in Nyack, NY and were originally called the Helen Hayes H.S. Theater Awards aka "The Helens". When the Helen Hayes Theatre Company closed, the Helen Hayes Youth Theatre took over the production of the awards program and renamed them the "Metros."

Each year, high schools in Rockland and Westchester Counties in New York and Bergen County in New Jersey participate in this awards program which celebrates the hard work, talent and enthusiasm which contributes to the success of our local high school musicals. We shine the spotlight on 30 categories of achievement from performance to technical artistry. The awards ceremony takes place in early June at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill, NY. Tony Award winners and other Broadway stars and technical theater professionals give out the "Metros" in a sold-out house of very enthusiastic young performers, hard-working high school educators and proud parents.

This year's event featured 39 participating high schools and was held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, June 7, 2010 at the Paramount Center for the Arts in Peekskill.
