Pittsburgh CLO’s Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater were launched in 1991 to celebrate the outstanding high school musical theater programs in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania and to honor the legacy of Pittsburgh native and Hollywood legend Gene Kelly. The program, which includes live student performances, recognizes the time, energy and dedication that local high schools devote to their musical productions, celebrates individual student achievements and encourages community support for arts education. In addition, college scholarships are awarded annually to qualified participating seniors.

Celebrating two decades of excellence in high school musical theater, Pittsburgh CLO’s 20th Annual Gene Kelly Awards were held at the Benedum Center on May 29, 2010. The event is co-presented by the University of Pittsburgh, with additional support provided by National City Bank of Pennsylvania, United States Steel Corp. and the CLO Ambassadors. Deloitte is the official auditor for the Gene Kelly Awards.
